How to know if You are a Candidate for IUI

Infertility is a disease of the male or female reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.

It is advised that couples having unprotected sex with no positive results within a year should consult a fertility doctor for necessary fertility assessment and treatment such as ART (assisted reproductive techniques).

ART is any clinical and laboratory technique used to enhance fertility with the aim of getting pregnant. IUI (intrauterine insemination) and IVF (in vitro fertilisation) are examples of ART.

Knowing the treatment that better increases your chance of achieving a positive result is important.

It is worthy to note that egg quality declines with age in women, therefore, younger women (below the age of 35 years) with a healthy reproductive system and spouse with good quality of sperm cells may want to opt for IUI treatment as the increases the concentration of sperm cells that get to the fallopian tube, therefore increasing the chance for fertilization and pregnancy.

However, the following diagnoses indicate IVF is the most suitable treatment as it works around substantially more infertility-causing issues. These diagnoses include; women above the age of 35 years, women with blocked tubes, severe male factor infertility, or a number of other male or female factors.

In addition, the IVF process alongside PGT will help couples avoid miscarriage, sickle cell anemia and other genetic disorders. Also this treatment that allows for gender selection (for the purposes of family balancing). Generally, the success rate for IVF is about 50% per cycle while for IUI, the record of success rate is between 5-20% per cycle.
