What we commit to, and how you can hold us to it.
Ask any agency to put its standards in writing. Here are ours, and here is how to check them.
Six commitments, in writing.
Agreements first
Written agreements are signed, and explained to you, before any treatment starts.
Her own lawyer
Every surrogate gets independent legal advice before she signs anything.
You know who she is
You know who is carrying your child, and she knows who you are. How you meet is agreed with her consent.
Costs in writing
An itemised breakdown, with fixed and estimated lines marked, before you commit.
Consent, always
Informed consent at each stage, in writing, and the right to say no.
Honest about outcomes
We never promise a pregnancy or a live birth. If something goes wrong, you hear it from us first.
Our code of practice
We base our behaviour on the moral principles of the medical oath we adhere to.
- We act in the best interest of our patients.
- We respect each person's autonomy to choose or refuse treatment.
- We promote good over harm.
- We rely on fairness and equality in how health resources are shared.
- We treat patients, and the people treating them, with dignity.
- We value informed consent before any healthcare intervention.
How to verify any agency, including us.
A good agency welcomes checks. Make these before you pay anyone.
1. The company
Ask for the registered company name and number, and look it up on the register of the Corporate Affairs Commission. Ask where its office is, and whether you can visit.
2. The lawyers
Ask for the name of every lawyer involved, and for whom each one acts. Confirm they are enrolled with the Nigerian Bar Association. The surrogate's lawyer should be hers, not the agency's.
3. The doctors and the clinic
Ask which clinic will treat you, and which doctors are responsible for you and for the surrogate. Check the doctors' registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, and ask how the facility is registered.
4. The contract
Ask for the full agreement and the itemised costs before any payment. Take them to your own lawyer. Be wary of any agency that will not send them in advance.
5. The surrogate
Ask how surrogates are screened, how they are supported during and after the pregnancy, and whether you can know who she is.
6. The references
Ask to speak to former clients who agree to talk to you. Be careful with testimonials that cannot be traced to a real person.
When you ask us. We will answer every one of these questions in writing, and we will send you the agreement and the costs before you pay anything.
Warning signs when you compare agencies.
- The contract arrives only after you have paid a deposit.
- The surrogate is anonymous, or nobody will say whether she had her own lawyer.
- You are given one total price and told the rest "depends".
- Citizenship and travel documents are described as "not your worry".
- Anyone guarantees a baby.
- You are pressured to pay quickly or to decide on the first call.
- Nobody can name the lawyers, doctors or clinic involved.
- Reviews cannot be traced to real people.
